Camillus man says trio plays politics with sediment issue.

Rick Hevier, of Camillus, is tired of hearing people say his town is about to become a toxic waste, and tonight he accused town Councilors David Phlippone, Mark Kolinski and Richard Griffo of using the controversy over where to bury contaminated sediment from Onondaga Lake for political gain.

“If what was being prepared was Love Canal or a toxic dump we’d be standing right along side these gentlemen,” Hevier said. “But instead, these gentlemen … are taking Camillus on a kamikaze mission to serve their political grandstanding.

DEC Announces Separate Review for Communities with “Filtration Avoidance Determinations”

Not exactly a Camillus “only” thing but interesting news for the area regarding the areas watersheds and supply.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis today announced that due to the unique issues related to the protection of New York City and Syracuse drinking water supplies, these watersheds will be excluded from the pending generic environmental review process for natural gas drilling using high-volume horizontal drilling in the Marcellus shale formation. Instead, applications to drill in these watersheds will require a case-by-case environmental review process to establish whether appropriate measures to mitigate potential impacts can be developed. There are 58 pending applications for horizontal drilling in the Marcellus shale; no applications are located in either the New York City or the Skaneateles Lake watersheds (Syracuse utilizes the Skaneateles watershed).

New York City and Syracuse use unfiltered drinking water from surface-water sources. These watersheds are subject to Filtration Avoidance Determinations (FADs) that present distinct land disturbance and usage issues independent of DEC’s ongoing review of the environmental safety of the high-volume hydraulic fracturing process.

Camillus Police warn of shopping scam. Citizens are receiving secret shopper scams regarding Pacific Research Inc.

The Town of Camillus Police Department has received several complaints involving a Secret Shopper scam that citizens are getting in the mail. The scam basically tells people to deposit an enclosed check into their bank account. Then you are to go to a Wal Mart store and purchase items while rating the service of the store. Also, you are to go to a Western Union location and wire funds back to a person named on the letter, while rating the service at the Western Union location. The scam says you can keep about $ 400.00 for your participation.

This scam allows the receiver to get the funds from Western Union, and because the deposited check is a fake, your bank take’s the funds from you and you are out the money.

If you should receive such a scam letter, call the Camillus Police Department to report the incident.

Wastebed 13 risk assessment expected to be done in about three weeks

Federal environmental officials expect to complete within three weeks an assessment of the risk to human health posed by burying Onondaga Lake sediment in Wastebed 13 in Camillus.

Robert Nunes, the Environmental Protection Agency’s project manager for the Onondaga Lake cleanup, said the assessment was begun two weeks ago in anticipation of a request earlier this week by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Dan Maffei.

WG athletics and fine arts may face cuts.

Loss of sales tax revenue may force cuts for the West Gennesee athletic and fine arts budgets.

Of the nearly $70 million annual budget, the West Genesee Central School District stands to lose $1.2 million in sales tax revenue shared by Onondaga County, a figure which could wipe out the fine arts and athletics budget.
All revisions to the sales tax sharing agreement being considered by the county legislature will cut sales tax shared with school districts.
“$1.2 million covers our entire athletics, entire fine arts and extracurricular activities,” Superintendent of Schools Christpher Brown said.
