Camillus Police Press Release.
The Camillus Police is inviting the community to participate in a special event!
Join us for a fundraising event at Applebees located at 5241 W Gennesee St Camillus, on 9-16-10 from 5pm to 8pm.
On Thursday, September 16, 2010 law enforcement officers and local officials will take their oath to “serve” and protect to a new level, trading in their handcuffs and badges for menus and serving trays to assist servers at the Applebee’s across Central New York! Donations will benefit Special Olympics New York and the Law Enforcement Torch Run®. The Torch Run is part of a year-round, grassroots fundraising campaign by law enforcement agencies to benefit their local Special Olympics Program. New York State Police, Camillus Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department and Auburn Correctional, among others, will be participating in this unique fundraising event.
Law Enforcement will be on hand at 6 Applebee’s across Central New York and will be greeting customers and helping out the wait staff. Law Enforcement will be in action at more than 30 Applebee’s locations statewide in hopes to raise thousands of dollars for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.
Special Olympics is an international year-round program of sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. More than 48,761 athletes in New York train and compete in 22 Olympic-type summer and winter sports. There are thousands of athletes from the Central New York area who participate in training clubs and competitions throughout the year. Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to develop fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy as they participate in the sharing of gifts and friendship with other athletes, their families and the community. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics is the largest grassroots fund-raising and public-awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world. Each year officers carry the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and deliver it to their local, state, or national Special Olympics Games.
In 2009, more than $1 million was raised for the athletes of Special Olympics New York through the Law Enforcement Torch Run initiative.
